How to use the hotspot feature on your iPhone

Did you know that you can use your iPhone as a wi-fi hotspot? When you set-up your iPhone to be a hotspot, you create a wi-fi network that up to 5 devices can connect to at a time. The connected devices will have access to use your cellular data from your phone plan.

Warning!!! Be careful, you can eat through your data plan very quickly.

How to turn on the hotspot settings?

  1. Tap the “Settings” button on your phone
  2. In the top set of setting, tap “Personal Hotspot
  3. Tap the “Switch” beside Personal Hotspot, it should turn green
  4. Your hotspot will be turned on

Wi-Fi Password

The password for your hotspot is located in the field “Wi-Fi Password”. The password is automatically set to a random password by the OS. This password will not change unless you change it.

NOTE: Each iPhone has it’s own password, so you do not need to change it unless you want a different password.

How to change the default password?

  1. Tap the “Password” beside Wi-Fi Password
  2. Change the password to whatever you desire
  3. Tap “Done” at the top of the screen

How to connect to your hotspot?

  1. Open your wi-fi setting on your device you wish to connect
  2. Select the “iPhone’s Name” from the wi-fi networks
  3. Enter the password for your iPhone hotspot
  4. Select “Connect” on your device

How to use your hotspot?

  • The iPhone will display a blue bar at the top of the screen showing how many connections are currently connected.
  • Your connected devices will work just like they are on a wi-fi network.

How to disconnect your devices?

There are 2 ways to disconnect from your hotspot.

  • Disconnect from the network
  • Turn off your hotspot

Disconnect your device from the network

  1. Go to your wi-fi settings on your device and disconnect from your hotspot network (iPhone Name)

Turn off the hotspot feature on your iPhone

  1. Tap the “Settings” button on your phone
  2. In the top set of setting, tap “Personal Hotspot
  3. Tap the “Switch” beside Personal Hotspot, it should turn gray

Tips

  • Turn your hotspot off when not in use.
  • If you are not connected to the hotspot for some time, you will no longer see it as a wi-fi network. To fix this, simply tap the “Switch”, beside “Personal Hotspot” from on to off and then back on. You should see the network.
  • Watch your data! you can eat through your data quickly.
  • Make sure the device connecting to your hotspot is not set to automatic updates. This can eat your data up quickly and you might never know.
